Book Kurt Thut - Protagonist of Swiss Home Culture

As an architect, furniture designer and producer, Kurt Thut (1931–2011) combined various aspects of Swiss interior culture. His career began with an apprenticeship as a carpenter in his father's company in Möriken, Aargau. He then trained as an architect and furniture designer under Willy Guhl, Hans Bellmann and Johannes Itten at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, where he worked as an assistant to Hans Fischli after completing his studies. Since the 1970s he has also been involved in the family company.

Thut's architectural work was strongly influenced by the Bauhaus and Mies van der Rohe. As a designer, he pursued a formally restrained and ecological approach for almost 50 years. In accordance with these principles, he also experimented successfully as a producer with new materials and techniques. Many of his designs are produced unchanged by the current company Thut Möbel, which was awarded the Swiss Grand Prix Design in 2009.

This first monograph comprehensively presents selected furniture designs and buildings by Kurt Thut. It documents how his purist yet innovative work has helped shape Swiss living and corporate culture.
