Scheidegger & Spiess | Hans Bellmann – Protagonist of Swiss Interior Design
Hans Bellmann: Architect and product designer. Protagonist of Swiss interior design.
Hans Bellmann (1911–1990) significantly influenced Swiss interior design in the 1950s and 1960s. Shaped by his studies at the Bauhaus in Dessau and Berlin and his work with Mies van der Rohe, Bellmann developed a distinctive design language, which was recognized by the Swiss Werkbund with a dozen "Die Gute Form" awards. After returning to Switzerland in 1934, Bellmann designed furniture for the company Wohnbedarf AG, built single-family homes, furnished furniture stores, and designed industrial products. He also worked as a lecturer at institutions including the Zurich School of Applied Arts and the Ulm School of Design.
This first monograph presents the work of the architect and designer in detail: with an introductory essay as well as many new photographs and texts about the individual projects. With contributions by Joan Billing and Samuel Eberli, Michael Hanak, Susanna Koeberle, Claude Lichtenstein, Renate Menzi, Juho Nyberg, and Arthur Rüegg.
The series "Protagonists of Swiss Interior Design" uncovers hidden treasures of Swiss design history and presents them to the public through meticulously curated books and exhibitions. Its aim is to raise awareness of this cultural design heritage and to foster networking among specialists, institutions, and design enthusiasts. Previous volumes have featured the designers and architects Alfred Altherr Junior, Klaus Vogt, Werner Max Moser, and Jacob Müller.
