Max Ernst Haefeli, a pioneer of Swiss modernism, designed the first architect-designed chairs in Switzerland for Horgenglarus in 1926. Unlike other designers, Haefeli did not seek to break with tradition, but instead created furniture that felt familiar.

As early as 1927, the Museum of Applied Arts in Zurich presented Haefeli`s furniture in the exhibition `Form without Ornament`, including the Model 293, the first standardized furniture of Swiss modernism. His chairs were correspondingly prominently featured in publications and exhibited extensively.

It has been manufactured in virtually unchanged form since 1926. Horgenglarus produces the haefeli chair, a renowned piece of furniture that has become part of Switzerland`s visual culture. For example, the `House of Switzerland` was furnished with haefeli chairs in 2014. The haefeli, as `Model 4`, is also part of the collection of the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich (Museum of Design Zurich).
