Ball Chair by Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio

The Ball Chair was designed in 1963 by Finnish designer Eero Aarnio and debuted at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1966. This chair is one of the most famous and popular Finnish design classics and marked Eero Aarnio`s international breakthrough. The Ball Chair can be found in the collections of design museums worldwide and has appeared in various films, music videos, and magazines.

With its simple, concise form and rich colors, Eero Aarnio`s Ball Chair is a typical symbol of the optimistic, consumer-oriented popular culture of the 1960s. A typical enthusiasm for technology is also evident: in the exposed plastic, which at the time allowed even complex shapes to be mass-produced relatively easily, as well as in the dynamic form, reminiscent of a space capsule.

The idea of such a movable capsule as a living space within the house also anticipates housing concepts that were discussed in the 1970s for a young, liberal society. While the gleaming, polished sphere appears futuristic and cool from the outside, it conceals a secluded, cozy living space inside. Outside noises penetrate only very faintly, allowing for comfortable seating in a variety of positions. Mounted close to the floor on a round metal base, the sphere can be rotated a full 360 degrees, thus varying the view.
