Cantilever chair S 43 by Mart Stam for Thonet | Black frame with armrests
Mart Stam / 1899
Steel tube classic S 43 – Clarity in the spirit of modernity
Simplicity that works everywhere: Mart Stam took the legs out of furniture that had been shaped according to similar principles for centuries. Through evolutionary refinement, he created an object that looks good anywhere understatement and quality are desired.
Mart Stam emphasized straightforward forms, aesthetic economy of construction, and improved seating comfort in all his furniture designs. With the S 43, he combined a tubular steel frame with molded plywood shells for the seat and back, achieving absolute reduction. The frame`s comfortable rocking motion eliminates the need for upholstery. Its clear, understated form makes this cantilever chair an exemplary design in the spirit of modernism.
The natural sciences reading room of the German National Library in Leipzig was furnished with the S 43 cantilever chair as early as 1933. More than 70 years later, Thonet delivered new S 43 chairs to complement the existing set. Only high-quality tubular steel furniture, typical of Thonet, is so durable and sustainable.
