Alvar Aalto Artek Chair 66
Alvar Aalto
Alvar Aalto is considered one of the most important Scandinavian designers and architects of the 20th century. He designed his Chair No. 66 in 1935. In the same year, Aalto, together with his wife Aino and two designer friends, founded the company Artek, which still produces the chair today.
Width 39 cm, depth 42 cm, height 80 cm, seat height 45.5 cm
Influenced by the German Bauhaus, Alvar Aalto experimented with plywood from 1927 onwards. Natural materials and organic forms became a hallmark of his designs. This is also evident in the 66 chair, which is made entirely of birch wood and features numerous curves and rounded surfaces. The bending of wood required for this was a technical innovation at the time of the chair`s creation, one that Aalto had been experimenting with together with Otto Korhonen since 1929. The resulting L-shape of the chair legs still guarantees unsurpassed stability today.
The flat backrest of the 66 chair is attached to the two rear chair legs. Here, too, rounded forms define its appearance. Organic and curved wooden constructions, as seen in the 66 chair, are a hallmark of Alvar Aalto. With this, he consciously resisted the cold, machine-like aesthetics and artificial materials of modernism.
The Artek 66 chair is available in various colors and also in an upholstered version.
