Scheidegger & Spiess | Susi and Ueli Berger: Furniture in Dialogue

Classics of modern and postmodern Swiss furniture design

Susi and Ueli Berger created Swiss design icons: the Soft Chair (1967), the Cloud Lamp (1970), the DS-600 Endless Sofa (1970), and, in 1981, the Drawer Stack and the Kung Fu Shelf. For over 40 years, graphic designer Susi Berger-Wyss and artist Ueli Berger designed furniture true to their credo: "Only a new idea justifies a new piece of furniture." With their intuitive, sometimes provocative, working methods, the couple left the well-trodden paths of functionalism and ventured into a world of contrasts between product design and object art, everyday practicality and playful provocation, rationality and sensuality. This required a constant, sometimes challenging, but also enjoyable dialogue not only between Susi and Ueli Berger, but also with manufacturers such as Röthlisberger, Victoria-Werke, and de Sede.

This book offers a complete catalogue raisonné of the more than 60 furniture designs by Susi and Ueli Berger. All are documented with original drawings and plans, as well as numerous photographs and facsimiles of promotional materials. Four thematic essays by renowned authors and an illustrated biography of the two designers complete the volume.
