Scheidegger & Spiess Trix and Robert Haussmann

Trix and Robert Haussmann are arguably Switzerland`s most internationally renowned architectural duo. Their collaborative work began in 1967 with the founding of what later became known as the Allgemeine Entwurfsanstalt Zürich (General Design Institute Zurich). They questioned modernism and redefined the fields of design, interior design, and architecture. Robert Haussmann taught at the Zurich School of Applied Arts, ETH Zurich, and the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, while Trix Haussmann also taught at ETH Zurich. In 2013, they were awarded the Grand Prix Design Switzerland.

This new volume in the series "Protagonists of Swiss Interior Design" examines the arc of tension between the early and late phases of Haussmann`s work. Through in-depth insights into individual projects, it reveals how the Haussmanns transitioned playfully, fluidly, and consistently from Modernism to "manierismo critico," how they absorbed and implemented social change between the late 1960s and the 1980s, and how they always remained true to themselves. The (chrono-)logical sequence of their work is presented with numerous images and documents, making the contrasting positions comprehensible and illustrating them as a continuum.

The series "Protagonists of Swiss Interior Design" uncovers hidden treasures of Swiss design history and presents them to the public through meticulously curated books and exhibitions. The aim is to raise awareness of this cultural design heritage and to foster networking among specialists, institutions, and design enthusiasts.
