The word `atelier` comes from French, means `workshop`, and according to Wikipedia, is `the workplace of a creative person`. One thing is certain: the atelier table lives up to its name. Standing freely in the room, it allows for optimal working from all sides. The Swiss architect and designer Hans Bellmann designed the atelier table for Horgenglarus in 1953. Now, after many decades, it is returning to the Glarus-based manufacturer`s product range.

The Horgenglarus studio table was already offered in catalogs of the 1950s and 60s, but its delicate design was probably still a bit too avant-garde and forward-looking for the time. This is actually surprising, because it`s an incredibly practical piece of furniture. The designer himself thought so too: Bellmann enjoyed working at the table he designed.

Bellmann`s goal was to design a very lightweight table. Furthermore, another fundamental principle of the former Bauhaus student comes into play here: the table should be extremely easy to disassemble. It can easily withstand moves that require dismantling and reassembling. This is due to the construction method and the quality of the fixings, which are again very typical of Bellmann.

The design has hardly changed compared to the 1953 version. The solid wood frame is joined at the corners by a double-sided mortise and tenon joint, creating the so-called counter-shape. This is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also makes the corners more robust and the tabletop more stable. The inlaid tabletop is slightly thinner than the frame, allowing for the insertion of cross braces to anchor the legs. The studio table thus retains its light character while remaining exceptionally stable.

The tabletop rests on legs made of matte black steel tubing. The legs splay outwards towards the floor, with each pair of legs meeting at a metal plate on the underside of the table. These two metal plates are each attached with four screws to solid wood crossbars mounted on the underside of the table. This means the Horgenglarus table requires only eight screws in total, and the tabletop can be easily detached from the frame, making this studio table the ideal companion for life, especially in times of high mobility.

The table`s dimensions are based on Le Corbusier`s Modulor, a system of proportions based on human body dimensions. Therefore, the table is available in lengths of 183 cm, 226 cm, and 296 cm, and widths of 86 cm and 113 cm (the latter only for the 296 cm long version). The height is 74 cm.
