From 1925 onwards, the Swiss architect carried out pioneering work in the field of private and public buildings in the spirit of the New Building movement. He also worked as an industrial designer for chair and iron furniture factories.

He completed his studies in the architecture department of the ETH Zurich. After working for Otto Bartning in Berlin (1923/24) and in his father Max Haefeli's architectural office, he opened his own office in Zurich (1926). During this time he created his first furniture designs for the Swiss furniture factory Horgenglarus. In 1927 he became head of the ' Collective Group of Swiss Architects ', who furnished apartments in Mies van der Rohe's apartment block in the Weissenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart. Between 1937 and 1975 he worked with Werner Max Moser and Rudolf Steiger.
