Chair S 35 L by Marcel Breuer for Thonet | Pure Materials
Marcel Breuer / 1902
Freely swinging with a continuous line – the tubular steel chair S 35
With its lightness, mobility and comfort, the chair outshines all the heavy and sluggish cantilever chairs of the Bauhaus era. In 1930, the modern attitude to life conveyed by the S 35 seemed visionary; today it is part of our mobile and individual lifestyle.
With the S 35, Marcel Breuer succeeded in constructing all the functions of a freely swinging tubular steel chair in a single continuous line that also includes the armrests. Breuer achieved a double cantilever effect with his design. The seat and armrests spring independently of each other. The swinging movement of the seat and back frame that protrude backwards is balanced by the springy armrests. For additional comfort, there is a matching footstool - also designed to be freely swinging.
The comfortable S 35 club chair was first shown in 1930 during the now famous presentation of the German Werkbund at the “Salon des Artistes Décorateurs” in Paris. There it was part of the furnishings of a prototypical high-rise apartment that Breuer realized together with Walter Gropius and Herbert Bayer.
Further information about the Thonet S 35 cantilever chair:
Materials:
- Chrome-plated steel tube frame
- Seat, back with brown buffalo leather
- Armrests in oiled walnut
Pure Materials:
"Pure Materials" only uses materials that ensure that nature is treated with care: the solid wooden parts are left natural and are only oiled; you can feel the structure of the wood. Over time, a natural patina forms through use, which gives each piece of furniture a unique, elegant look. Only solid wood from sustainable forestry (FSC and PFSC) is used. The cover material is a distinctive, grained leather that is tanned in an environmentally friendly way and is particularly hard-wearing.
Mass:
Width 65 cm, depth 83 cm, height 84 cm
This chair is available in other frame and leather colors.
