Sassi Stones by Piero Gilardi for Gufram

Piero Gilardi

The Sassi `armchair stones` were developed by Piero Gilardi for Gufram in 1968. Piero Gilardi brings stones of different dimensions into the domestic space, which serve as bucolic seats or decorative elements.

In 1968, the Gufram Sassi Stones, made of polyurethane foam, were exhibited for the first time at the Triennale in Milan. They are considered one of the symbols of Gufram`s play with illusion. The Sassi stones, which are aesthetically reproduced faithfully to the original, lose their weight and their well-known properties thanks to the use of a light material such as polyurethane.

The largest stone, Sedilsasso, serves as an armchair or stool while the smaller stones have a decorative character. Through the use of Guflac, a paint patented by Gufram that allows polyurethane to look like leather while maintaining its flexibility and softness, the Sassi become a surreal game between reality and fiction.

The Sassi Stones by Gufram are part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Gufram products are limited to 2000 pieces worldwide. They are always delivered as a set of 3.
