Tubular steel classic S 43 – clarity in the spirit of modernity

Simplicity that has an impact everywhere: Mart Stam removed the back legs of furniture that had been designed according to similar principles for centuries. Through evolutionary refinement, the result is an object that cuts a fine figure in any place where both understatement and quality are required.

In all of his furniture designs, Mart Stam focused on straight lines in form, aesthetic economy in construction and the benefits of improved seating comfort. In the S 43, he combined the tubular steel frame with molded wood shells for the seat and back, thereby creating an absolute reduction. The comfortable swinging effect of the frame means that upholstery is not necessary. Its clear, restrained form makes this cantilever chair an exemplary design in the spirit of modernism.

The natural sciences reading room of the German National Library in Leipzig was equipped with the S 43 cantilever chair as early as 1933. More than 70 years later, Thonet delivered a new S 43 as a complement. Only high-quality tubular steel furniture, such as that typically provided by Thonet, is as durable and sustainable.
