Ga 7-070 chair from horgenglarus

Hans Bellmann

From one to two and from two to one: this is the principle of the ga chair from horgenglarus, put very simply. With its two shells, it is a unique and innovative design from the 1950s. The Swiss architect and designer Hans Bellmann designed the chair in 1955 and horgenglarus manufactured it until 1970. Now the oldest table and chair manufacturer in Switzerland is re-releasing the innovative ga chair.

As he had done four years previously with the single-point chair, Hans Bellmann experimented with molded plywood for the ga chair and explored the manufacturing possibilities for seat shells. He wanted to give the shell another dimension beyond its two-dimensionality. This idea was the starting point for the new design.

Bellmann used a wider shell, split it in the middle and then reassembled the two parts not exactly parallel but slightly offset. A unique approach to first split the seat shell in the direction of the seat and then reassemble them, because at that time, today's manufacturing options for shaping and stretching seat shells were not yet known. Bellmann achieved his goal with a little trick: he reassembled the two parts at a slight angle. The different cutting angles create the third dimension. The shell is not really bent in three dimensions, but gains a level through the construction. This is why the ga-chair was often called a two-shell chair.

Bellmann places great importance on details in the ga chair and designs and draws every single part himself: retaining screws, rubber pads or rubber cuffs for the legs. He even developed an entire ga program that was part of the horgenglarus range in the 50s and 60s: versions with and without armrests, stackable or not, as a rocking chair with wooden runners, with removable fabric cover or as a swivel office chair with height adjustment.

With its unique construction and exceptional design, the ga chair is now one of the classics of Swiss furniture design. For the Swiss National Exhibition Expo in Lausanne in 1964, the architect Marc j. Saugey from Geneva furnished the Ticino restaurant entirely with ga chairs. In addition, the ga chair received the 'Good Form' award from the Swiss Werkbund SWB in 1956.

Bellmann remains true to his design principle for the ga: he prefers it to be straightforward and practical. He uses a single screw for the single-point chair, but two for the ga chair: the two-part seat shell of the ga chair is connected to a small metal plate at the back and two metal plates at the bottom. The tubular steel base frame is attached to these with two screws.
