The tubular steel desk S 285: an important piece of contemporary history
As if Marcel Breuer had anticipated the home office and mobile computers of our day: The compact tubular steel desk S 285 that he designed is an elegant companion for the current lifestyle and work style.
Marcel Breuer`s tubular steel desk S 285 for Thonet is a successful example of the programmatic claim of the Bauhaus to combine art and technology into a new unity. The trained carpenter combines his knowledge of tubular steel with his experience in interior design. The table top and storage elements made of lacquered or stained wood fit harmoniously into the frame made of bent tubular steel. The supporting frame consists of a curved line, and the wooden elements, characterized by clear shapes, seem to float within it. The clear, formally balanced furniture embodies an important piece of contemporary history, known as "The New Objectivity". Thonet still produces different versions of this striking model today.
