Fun 4DM pendant lamp by Verner Panton for Verpan

Verner Panton

Verner Panton, who moved to Basel in 1963, contacted the Swiss lamp manufacturer J. Lüber AG in 1964 with a design for a lamp made of hundreds of reflective discs. Lüber liked the design but had concerns about the material, which consisted of cut-out silver foil. Panton switched to round metal discs, which had the same effect, and in another design also to round, semi-transparent shell plates. The `Fun` series of lamps was born.

And with this design, Panton proved himself to be a master of variation. The `Fun` series of shell lamps includes various hanging lamps of different sizes as well as table lamps and floor lamps. All lamps are based on the same principle and structure. Shell plates hanging on chains are arranged in a ring around the light source, either as a cluster or on concentric rings that form a staircase from top to bottom.

With his `Fun` lamps, Verner Panton anticipated an idea in 1964 that would later make the Spanish fashion designer Paco Rabanne famous. In the late 1960s, Rabanne processed small discs made of metal and plastic into clothes and jewelry and became a world-famous innovator in the fashion world overnight.
