The architect Willy Boesiger opened it in 1935 on the ground floor of the former Hotel 'Du Lac' at Limmatquai 16 to bring Parisian café culture to Zurich. The Select was the favorite café of the bohemians, writers, actors, architects, journalists and intellectuals, a place of entry for foreigners and nonconformists. Among them were Klaus Mann, Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt. In memory of the restaurant, which closed in 1998, the Zurich DJ Oliver Stumm opened the bistro 'Café Select' in New York's Lafayette Street with furniture from horgenglarus to bring subtle Swiss flair to the metropolis.
