Cross-frame chair by Max Bill | Beech, oak and walnut

Max Bill

The design for the cross-frame chair dates back to 1952 and has been produced to this day – as a re-edition since 1999. The model shows Max Bill's skills as a product designer and has received several awards, including "die gute form" from the Swiss Werkbund in the 1950s.

The leg construction using a cross-frame connection is an invention of Bill. This supports the seat in the middle and gives the chair the greatest possible static support. In terms of form, the contrast between the thin seat and the strong frame accentuates the technical structure and makes it appear powerful and sculptural. And last but not least, it is extremely comfortable.
