Studio table t-7060 from horgenglarus | 183 - 296cm

Hans Bellmann

The word 'atelier' comes from French, means 'workshop' and, according to Wikipedia, is 'the workplace of a creative person'. One thing is certain: the studio table lives up to its name. Standing freely in the room, it is ideal for working on from all sides. The Swiss architect and designer Hans Bellmann designed the studio table for Horgenglarus in 1953. Now, after many decades, it is returning to the Glarus manufacturer's range.

The studio table from horgenglarus was already offered in the catalogs of the 50s and 60s, but the delicate design was probably a bit too avant-garde and forward-looking for the time. This is actually surprising, because it is an incredibly practical companion. The designer himself thought so too: Bellmann enjoyed working on the table he designed.

Bellmann's goal was to design a very light table. Another basic idea of the former Bauhaus student also comes into play here: the table should be extremely easy to dismantle. It can easily cope with moves where the table has to be dismantled and reassembled. This is due to the construction method and the quality of the fixings, which are very typical for Bellmann.

The design has hardly changed compared to the 1953 design. The solid wood frame is interlocked at the corners by a recess on both sides, creating the so-called counter-shape. This is not only aesthetically pleasing, the corners are also more robust and the table top more stable. The inserted table top is slightly thinner than the frame, so cross braces can be fitted to anchor the legs. The studio table thus retains its light character and is extremely stable.

The table top stands on legs made of matt black tubular steel. The legs are flared out towards the floor, with two legs meeting at a time on a metal plate on the underside of the table. The two metal plates are each attached with four screws to solid wood cross braces that are attached to the underside of the table. The horgenglarus table therefore only needs a total of eight screws and the table top can be easily removed from the frame, making the studio table the ideal companion for life, especially in times of great mobility.

The dimensions of the table are based on Le Corbusier's Modulor, a system of proportions based on the human body dimensions. Therefore, the table is available in lengths of 183 cm, 226 cm and 296 cm and widths of 86 cm and 113 cm (the latter only for the 296 cm version). The height is 74 cm.
