Interview Wohnrevue 2020 / 03 Fabio Dubler
Fabio Dubler, a year ago you opened the new furniture store H100 on Zurich's Hohlstrasse. How has the business developed since then?

Fortunately, I can answer this question very well. I am grateful for how everything turned out: our existing customers remained loyal to us and many new ones joined us.
How big is the store and how many employees do you employ here?
The premises have a sales area of around 400 m2 and have very high ceilings. Thanks to this, we were able to install various platforms and a gallery, which allowed us to increase the effective sales area to around 600 m2. The shop is managed
of three salespeople and three background staff.

H100 brings together the Zurich cult vintage store Bogen 33, parts of Viadukt*3 and Memorie.ch. What's the story behind the latter?

Memorie.ch is our joint online shop for design classics. We sell high-quality furniture, often produced in small factories. In the H100 we mix the newly produced design classics with vintage design - the result is an exciting mix that inspires our customers.

That almost sounds like an interior design credo. Do you also pass this on to your customers as a tip?

Customer needs are different - it would be wrong to recommend the same thing to everyone. Some come to us with a specific idea of a sofa, others are not looking for anything specific and are looking for a surprising one-off piece. Still others are interested in a limited edition such as the Moser armchair and stool in the Mondrian look, which we launched last year together with Embru as part of the Bauhaus anniversary.

Currently, the temperatures outside are rising again - with spring comes the gardening season. An important topic for you?

The garden season has long been an important part of our offering. Over the years we have built up a coherent range. It includes both our own products and those of partners such as Landibank.

Topic of in-house production – is there a bestseller?

Yes: our spaghetti garden chair. The design was created by Huldreich Altorfer in the 1940s, which we have reissued and which we have now been producing for several years.

The garden becomes an extended living room. What does this look like in your home?

I live a little way out of town and have both a covered and an outdoor seating area. There are spaghetti chairs and loungers in the grounds, as well as a heavy granite table that belongs to the house and aluminum chairs from Seleform.

What other H100 products do you have at home?

Some: including tables and chairs by Max Bill, various Memphis products, Danish vintage furniture and many more.

What is your favorite piece?

A wooden chair by Alvar Aalto.

Specialty shops often have a tough time these days. What is your recipe for remaining successful?

Our advantage is the mix of old design classics and new products: H100 is not just a furniture store, but has almost a museum-like character that attracts people. In addition, just a few meters away we have a 1400 m2 warehouse with unique pieces that you don't find everywhere. The range enables us to expand our services: we advise builders and architects and supply projects in the private and commercial sectors.

Where do you see H100 in five years?

We have no desire to open new stores - we are concentrating on further establishing the location here. In the long term, we will almost certainly expand the warehouse into a showroom and try to build new partnerships. We want to continue to offer our customers a unique, growing range.
