stacking table t-7030 from horgenglarus

Hans Bellmann

Graceful and elegant: the stacking table is an extremely practical beauty. Hans Bellmann designed the stackable nesting table in 1954.

Bellmann`s main idea was to design functional and easily movable furniture. At that time, however, the living rooms were more likely to be furnished with farmhouse furniture and country house style. The flexible and light furniture designs of the 1950s still seemed strange to people, but on the other hand they reflected the spirit of the times in a very special way.

In addition to the material-saving construction and the quick assembly, a major advantage of the design is that it allows for extremely flexible use. The table is, as the name suggests, stackable. It can easily be carried from room to room or from inside to outside. Hans Bellmann himself liked to use the stacking table as a storage space for his painting utensils. This meant he could work very flexibly and place the table, loaded with a wide variety of things, wherever he needed it.

Catalogs from horgenglarus from the 1950s and 1960s show that the table was a permanent fixture in the Glarus manufacturer`s product range. It was manufactured in Glarus from 1954 to 1970. The idea of reviving it is already a few years old. Original parts of the table have been lying in the attic of the oldest table and chair manufacturer in Switzerland for decades. These are the historical molded parts from the 1950s - exact patterns of the individual parts of the stacking table. This made it possible to transfer the original dimensions of the table to the new edition and thus recreate it true to the original.

`Tray table - elegant and hard to find!` is what it says on English-language websites for vintage furniture. The stacking table is listed here as a very special retro design gem. The object from the 1950s is actually only rarely available for purchase, but even then the delicate design was appreciated: in 1960 the design, then called `stackable nesting tables`, was awarded the `Good Form` award by the Swiss Werkbund for the first time.

As with other Bellmann designs, such as the single-point chair or the studio table, the legs of the horgenglarus table lean outwards and are attached centrally. Bellmann has used the same principle since the 1950s: two screws and four support points.

With the stacking table, another timelessly elegant design by a Swiss designer and architect has been added to the horgenglarus range.
