The first lamp, called TYPE 600, was designed and manufactured by Rosmarie and her husband Rico Baltensweiler for their own use in 1951. The creation quickly found favor and the family had to expand their studio and production facility. Rosmarie Balltensweiler had previously studied interior design at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich and worked, among other things, as a designer in Willy Guhl's architectural office.

Wohnbedarf AG sold the first creation from Haus Baltensweiler and, on behalf of the furniture store Knoll International, they designed a new series of lights. This was followed by lighting designs for public buildings such as the town hall and art house in Lucerne and the theatre in Zurich. Haus Baltensweiler was the first Swiss company to use halogen in its lighting development and in 2003 they were also considered pioneers in the use of LEDs.

Through constant innovation in the company's more than 60-year history, the Baltensweiler lamp collection, which is now internationally renowned, was developed.
