Carta Chaise Longue by Shigeru Ban | Carta Collection

Narrow, thin cardboard tubes flow in gently curved lines over frames made of birch plywood: what sets the Carta Collection by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban apart is its unusual material for furniture. Inspired by cardboard tubes used to store construction drawings, Shigeru Ban began studying the possible uses of paper in architecture in the late 1980s. Today he is world famous, not least thanks to his "paper architecture".

Organic shapes meet sustainable materials.
The cardboard tubes - the so-called paper tubes - for the Carta Collection come from Japan, where they are treated with urethane resin to make them robust against liquids and other influences. The furniture is manufactured in Italy, where a sophisticated technology has made it possible to attach the individual tubes to the simple birch plywood frames of the seating furniture without metal and with just a few invisible screws.
