Graceful and elegantly designed: The stackable nesting table is an exceptionally practical beauty. Hans Bellmann designed the stackable nesting tables in 1954.
Bellmann`s central idea was to design functional and easily movable furniture. However, at that time, homes were more commonly furnished in a rustic, country style. The flexible and lightweight furniture designs of the 1950s seemed unusual to people, but on the other hand, they perfectly reflected the spirit of the age.
Besides its material-saving construction and quick assembly, a major advantage of the design is its extremely flexible use. As the name suggests, the table is stackable. It can easily be carried from room to room or from indoors to outdoors. Hans Bellmann himself liked to use the stackable table as a storage space for his painting supplies. This allowed him to work very flexibly and move the table, loaded with various items, wherever he needed it.
Catalogues from Horgenglarus dating back to the 1950s and 60s confirm that the small table was a staple in the Glarus-based manufacturer`s product range at that time. It was produced in Glarus from 1954 to 1970. The idea of reviving it is already several years old. Original parts of the table have been stored in the attic of Switzerland`s oldest table and chair manufacturer for decades. These are the historical molded parts from the 1950s – exact samples of the individual components of the stackable table. This made it possible to transfer the table`s original dimensions to the new production run and thus recreate it faithfully.
`Tray table - elegant and hard to find!` says English-language websites for vintage furniture. The stackable table is listed there as a very special retro design gem. This piece from the 1950s is indeed rare to find for sale, but even back then its delicate design was appreciated: in 1960, the design, then called `stackable nesting tables`, was awarded the `Die gute Form` prize by the Swiss Werkbund for the first time.
As with other designs by Bellmann, such as the single-point chair or the studio table, the legs of the Horgenglarus table slope outwards and are centrally attached. Bellmann has used the same principle since the 1950s: two screws and four support points.
The stacking table is another timelessly elegant design by a Swiss designer and architect that has been added to the Horgenglarus product range.
