Mushroom Chair by Pierre Paulin for Artifort

Pierre Paulin

The Mushroom armchair by Pierre Paulin is one of the most famous designs in the world. It is still part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. What sets the Mushroom (F560) apart is its unique shape, bright colors and the then revolutionary manufacturing technique.

Pierre Paulin came up with the idea for the Mushroom Chair when he saw women clad in their bathing suits. He wanted the beautiful curves and a seamless, one-piece and stretchy fabric for his next chair.

In collaboration with Artifort, Paulin began his research into stretch fabric upholstery in 1958. The seamless one-piece construction method revolutionized the design technique of the time and was the beginning of a new aesthetic.
