Memphis is considered a cultural phenomenon of the 80s and revolutionized the design world. In the 1980s, Ettore Sottsass got together with young designers such as Matteo Thun, Aldo Cibic, Michele De Lucchi and Barbara Radice in Milan and together they founded Memphis. The name of the group comes from a song by Bob Dylan, 'Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues again', which was played one evening in the winter of 1980 at Ettore Sottsass's house during a meeting with friends.

Memphis abolished creative boundaries previously imposed by industry and instead championed new shapes, materials and motifs. The first collection was released in 1981 and it was a huge hit: explosive colors, lush motifs, daring asymmetries - nothing had been seen before. Memphis quickly became the label that broke taboos in Italy, leaving behind the typical designs of the 1970s and instead bringing color and madness to the 1980s - in the spirit of Pop Art.

Memphis' creations are colourful, cheerful, optimistic and humorous and impress with unusual surfaces and initially contradictory material combinations.
