Basket Chair Gian Franco Legler | Indoor rattan chair with black frame

Gian Franco Legler / 1922

The then 29-year-old Swiss-Italian designer Gian Franco Legler designed the Basket Chair in 1951 for the restaurant The Basket in Italy. Legler commissioned local basket weavers and metal workers to produce the first 52 chairs.

The Basket Chair quickly became a success, not only in Italy and Switzerland, but also in Germany and the USA. In 1953, Gian Franco Legler received the Good Design Award from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa) in New York for the Basket Chair. Equally important for him was the encouragement he received from Charles Eames.

The feelgood designs Basket Chair is stackable and exceptionally comfortable. The rattan shell is hand-woven, has a very fine and soft weave structure and is available in natural or dark grey. The light metal structure in combination with the weave gives the chair a timeless yet very modern finish.
